One of the "New Hollywood" directors, Bogdanovich started as a film journalist until he got hired to work on Roger Corman's The Wild Angels (1966). After that film's success, he directed his own film Targets (1968), a critical success.

Bogdanovich was born in Kingston, New York, the son of Herma (Robinson) and Borislav Bogdanovich, who was a pianist and painter. His mother was Austrian Jewish and his father, who was Serbian, was an Orthodox Christian.His parents both arrived in the U.S. in May 1939 on visitors' visas, along with his mother's immediate family, at the onset of World War II.He graduated from New York City's Collegiate School in 1957 and studied acting at the Stella Adler Conservatory.He was fluent in Serbian, having learned it before English.
